Day 2 of Editing

Today we edited the final 3rd of our music video.
We haven't yet filmed out the middle part of our video, this is because it is a different location. We are planning to do the filming for the middle ASAP.
As for the editing it went well again we are getting wizards on "Final Cut Express", we are now going to start adding effects and make our video look even more amazing!
We have not have any major problems YET so we hope that this good luck continues.

Day 1 of Editing

The first day of editing went really well. We got the first 50 seconds of the song edited and we think it looks good. We wasnt expecting it to look as good as it does. While we was filming it we was worrying about how it would looked but we are pleased how it has come out. We are using a new software called "Final Cut Express" as we are not used to it, it is stressful at first. Last year we used "IMoive" which we finally got used to then when we started this year we had to change to "Final Cut Express".

Therefore we are pleased with our start, ready to go to the next stage.

Day 5 of Filming - Getting There

Today we took the camera over the park to do the last bit of filming. It is for the last part of the video. Some of the shots that we took were perfessional standard I think! They look amzing when we uploaded it onto the IMac. It should be easy to editing. But the thanks have to go to Mike for the ideas for the types and angles of the shots that we used today!

Day 4 of Filming - Some progress

We took some shots today but we are limited for time as we both work evenings and weekends. We will get this video done but it will take longer than first expected. We done about an hour or so of filming today. slowly but surely we are getting there and making some progress, we would of done a lot more, but it is so hard not to laugh while singing into a camera. Also while filming we make changes to our story board therefore for some shots you will not recognise them from our story board.

Day 3 of Filming - The Car

We thought we would use my car for the start of the song. We was going to drive from school to my house using a POV shot then speed it up so it goes down to around 7 seconds. We had some problems while shooting this.
Such as;
  1. Mike was just about seat belted in so it was a little unsafe
  2. Every time we went over a speed bump the camera was hard to keep still
  3. Bumpy roads also made the camera jolt
  4. The camera lens kept on steaming up so the picture quality was poor

Day 2 of Filming - Setting up

We got round my house and realised me needed to do a few things before filming. This is because I am currently decorating in my house. We had to move boxes and tidy up before we started. This took a couple of hours so by the end we didn't have enough time to film. So we left it for today and thought we start another day from scratch. We also made sure that we picked all the camera angles were choosen and that we had all theprops readyfor when we start. It may not of been a good day for filming but we are all ready to go for next time now!

Day 1 of Filming - The Snow

Well this day was living hell!
We was all planed from the night before and raring to go as we was starting our filming late anyway. But we woke up to this! about 5 cm of freezing cold snow! we had planed to go to London and get a big chunk of the video filmed. We got to the train station and the trains were mad. there was hardly any trains going into London at this point in time we was both cold and wet. Therefore we got back on the bus and went home, we would of spent more time fighting to get on a train than filming.

Organisation of Resources

This is a list of what we are going to use within our music video. We had to take into consideration that we are restricted with what we have got as we don't have millions of pounds to spend.
  • Performers: Myself, Mike and random Friends
  • Locations: My car, My house, Central London (Leicester Square/Soho), London trains, London train stations, Local Park
  • Costumes: Casual clothing - as if we was going out for the night in town
  • Props: Paracetamol - acting as Ecstasy, glass of water, fake alcoholic drink

The Workload

We have split the workload so that we both have an equal import to our video. Also this means we will also both have the same amount of lesson time for blogging!

Tasks for me;
  • Finding Music
  • Researching into genres of music and artists
  • Looking after the camera equipment and tripod
  • Filming and directing the video
  • Making appearances within the video
  • Keeping Blog up to date
Tasks for Mike;
  • Research into other music videos
  • Research into target audience
  • Editing the preliminary, animatic and music video
  • Creating the story board
  • Making appearances within the video
  • Keeping up to date on the blog

Costumes!

When we was thinking about what we wanted our artist to wear whatever the genres were linked to. For the indie side of the genre we wanted to wear casual clothes like jeans and trainers. For the pop/rap part of the video we want him to wear a stereotyped hoody and tracksuit bottoms. These where some of the images that we looked at while looking at the costumes.
We also looked at the artist eminem, but the images I wanted to upload would not upload. The image was him in black trousers and a black hoody, with black trainers.

Music Video Initial Ideas

Me and Mike Had a lesson when the Internet wasn't working, instead of just sitting around we made a spider diagram on a word document. These are some of our first thoughts for our music video.

Damaged File!!!!!!!!!!

We was doing our animatic and it was coming close to the end of the lesson so I started packing away. I disconnected the camera and then a message popped up saying something about a damaged file. We should of put the images on the mac first but we didn't! that's why it said the file was damaged, the files wasn't backed up. Hopefully we will be about to reconnect the camera and everything will be OK. (fingers crossed).

Health and Safety Risk Assesment

  1. No filming in inappropriate locations.
  2. Check safety of locations e.g. roads.
  3. When filming on location ensure a teacher or responsible adult knows where you are and have a telephone number and when you will return.
  4. Minimise risk of theft of equipment
  5. Check all equipment is working before you leave
  6. Ensure you have permission for filming if necessary.
  7. Always film with at lease one other person.
  8. Ensure you have the permission of those you are filming.

No Planning!!!

In a lesson we was watching a documentary called "The Videos That Shaped The 80's". We got half way thought and they started taking about the making off Duran Duran - Rio & Elton John - I'm still standing, these videos might of seemed like they were planned to perfection, but it was the furthest point away from that. Both of these videos had minimal planning in fact "I'm Still Standing" was made up as they was going along. "Rio" was just as bad, the director realised that he didn't have enough filming so he borrowed a Germans Video camera that was on holiday took some shots like the saxophone shot then sent him back his camera when they was home with the tape.
These videos were made by well known people, we are no bodies in the music business and we are putting more time and effort into planning. Not to forget without the planning these videos are some of the most famous in the music business.

A New Way To Make A Video?

Me and mike were browsing on YouTube and came across and advertisement that we thought was amazing it used only still images. From this it made a new style of video. We later found a students work from another school who had adopted this idea and used it for there music video. We both thought it wad brilliant! take a look ? The first is the advertisement the second is the music video.

Copyright

Copyright is a set of exclusive rights granted to the author or creator of an original work, including the right to copy, distribute and adapt the work. The exclusive rights are however balanced for public interest purposes with limitations and exceptions to the exclusive right - such as fair dealing and fair use. Copyright theory says that it is the balance between the exclusive rights and the limitations and exceptions that engenders creativity. Copyright does not protect ideas, only their expression or fixation. In most jurisdictions copyright arises upon fixation and does not need to be registered. Copyright owners have the exclusive statutory right to exercise control over copying and other exploitation of the works for a specific period of time, after which the work is said to enter the public domain. Uses which are covered under limitations and exceptions to copyright, such as fair use, do not require permission from the copyright owner. All other uses require permission and copyright owners can license or permanently transfer or assign their exclusive rights to others.

Distribution of Our Music Video

We was discussing between our self's on the places our own music video would be shown. We thought our video would be good enough to be shown not only on the internet but on some music channels. We took into consideration that we are working with an unsigned band, and the song is not a huge number one but the song has potential.
We came up with these channels that we thought were suitable for an indie band;
-The Box
-The Vault
-Flava
-4Music
-MTV
-Viva
As our song is not going to be a number one hit we will not have a prime time slot so we thought we would be shown between 8:00pm - 12:00am
We also thought of some internet websites that we could use to promote our music so our band becomes well known across the world;
-Youtube.com
-Mtv.com
-Musicjesus.com
-Music.com

Fij (Our Choice of Artist)

This is our chosen artist we found on Unsigned.com. His Music name is Fij but his real name is Nick Fitzgerald. This is what he and his producer wrote about there self on there unsigned website. "Fij is singer/producer duo Nick Fitzgerald (Singer/Songwriter) and George Kafka (Producer.) We make electronic music influenced by a wide range of genres, bands, artists, and producers. We have been making music and recording together for three or four years although previously as a band; we decided to switch to the singer/producer relationship due to George's increasing interest in electronic music. We are currently in the process of recording the 5 track 'One More Year EP."

Wordle

This wordle is just words that remind me of music videos. These were just some of the words that popped into my head straight away.

This wordle id the lyrics of our song. I did this to see which words it highlighted, as i might be able to get some ideas for my music video from certain words.

Unsigned.com

Unsigned.com has some unbelievable artist on its books. It is so simple to use the hardest thing about the website is finding an artist that you want as you have so many to choose from. We was lucky when we found our artist because it was just by chance. I was supposed to click on the artist next to him but accidentally click on Fij. I thought I would give the song a go and listened to it, good job I did because I enjoyed it. as soon as I listened to it I went to try and find him e-mail to ask permission straight away.

Preliminary Music Video Exercise

Me and Mike tried our best to do a preliminary task. We found this task really hard as we both have zero experience with lip syncing and music videos. We tried our best with the little time we had, and also the restrictions we had with the location as we was only allowed in school. In this task we myself and Mike tried to included as many different shots as we could, this because we are suing a new software at school so we are learning all new and different ways of editing. We used the same song as we are going to use in our actual music video, as we thought it will help us in the long run.

More Audience Research

Me and Mike went around one lunch time armed with a pen and clip board each. We asked 100 people what there favourite genre of music is. We tried to get a 50-50 split between male and female but we just found more boys then girls that where willing to tell us.

We then broke this down to male and female;

Audience Research

Me and Mike had an idea to walk around school with a camera, and asked random people what their favourite music video was and why? In total we filmed around 10 people. Unfortunately the girls were a bit shy so they wouldn't go on the camera. So for them we just got a list of videos that they liked.

Some of the music videos that the girls said where;
Eminem - Love the way you lie
Strokes - You only live once
Drake - Over
Paul Simon - You can call me Al

Our Music Lyrics

We thought it would be a good idea for us to write up the lyrics to the song that we are planning on using. The was only one word that we couldn't work out and it was niglybubblytee I have highlighted this "word" in the song by using *. We asked a few people if they could work out that word but they all was as confused as us. We came to the decision we are not going to be lip synching that word due to us not actually knowing it.

Fij - One More Year

what's that...oo wha ah ooohhhh

ill go oo ohhhhh

you know oh ohhhh... ill see you again soon

we got one more year 'till we disappear,

there will be no more days just sitting here,

in a nice *niglybubblyteer,*

try so hard but i cant suppress the fear of so many people that I call my friend

one or a few more that its fun to pretend

while i done a bit wrong that I try to amend

and I'm so-so sorry if i hurt you but

this life is a life of Ecstasy I know that they're always next to me

say what they like it brings out the best in me

1 2 3 4 sing the rest with me

what's that...oo wha ah ooohhhh

ill go oo ohhhhh

you know oh ohhhh... ill see you again soon

oo wha ah ooohhhh

ill go oo ohhhhh

you know oh ohhhh... ill see you again soon

Missed the last train but its not surprising

Ain't no trains when the sun is rising

Hoods up checking each others eyes and pay a high price for the socialising

Jaw is aching, my dawn is breaking

Real life is overtaking, historical night in the making

Here comes the come down conversation

But everybody knows, the highs are worth the lows

That's just the way it goes, thats just the path we chose

So let me take you back to half past 8

Waiting at a station and the train is late

I'ouda allowed myself to anticipate

So bring on the drums, bring on the base

A few hours later and the music was blaring out

Man there was nothing I cared about

Right then I'll say it again

Love my life and I love my friends

Like... what's that... oo wha ah ooohhhh

ill go oo ohhhhh

you know oh ohhhh... ill see you again soon

oo wha ah ooohhhh

ill go oo ohhhhh

you know oh ohhhh... ill see you again soon

ill see you again (x3)

But everybody knows, the highs are worth the lows

That's just the way it goes, that's just the path we chose (x4)

what's that... oo wha ah ooohhhh

ill go oo ohhhhh

you know oh ohhhh... ill see you again soon

Bruno Mars - Just the Way You Are

At the start of this video you see a woman listening to a tape with her headphones on. this is just to introduce her to the people watching. You later learn that she is the main point of this song/music video. The woman is not the reason I picked this song, the reason I picked it was what the do with the tape when its on the table. He starts off by pulling out the tape and he arranges it to first his name then the name of the song. Thought out the song it is illustrated by the same technique first by her face then of Bruno Mars singing the song. The songs cuts between this and them two looking into each others eyes though out the song. This shows how close they are and it also emphasises the meaning of the song.

The five most expensive music videos ever!

1. 30 Seconds to Mars – “From Yesterday”$13 million?
The first American music video to be shot entirely in the People’s Republic of China, this expensive music video has 30 Seconds to Mars transported to ancient China where they play for a child emperor. The video features more than 300 extras and was directed by Bartholomew Cubbins, an alias for actor and Mars frontman Jared Leto. However, the $13 million figure is disputed—is this the world’s most expensive music video?

2. Michael Jackson (featuring Janet Jackson) – “Scream”$7 million
One of Michael Jackson’s most successful videos, “Scream” is a black and white science fiction/pop masterpiece that has both Jacksons dancing along the walls and ceilings of a spaceship while anime and pop art are featured on various displays throughout. The video received widespread approval, including several MTV Video Music Awards and even a Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video.

3. Madonna – “Die Another Day” $6 million
Another song by the pop diva, this one was released alongside the James Bond film of the same name. The video shows Madonna being tortured in a number of ways while Good Madonna and Bad Madonna duel with a variety of weapons—from fencing foils to harpoon guns—in her subconscious. After its release, “Die Another Day” became the most successful 007 theme since the 80s.

4. Madonna – “Bedtime Story” $5 million
An experimental video set to an equally experimental song, the “Bedtime Story” video consists of surreal, dreamlike images. Throughout the video, Madonna floats, gives birth to doves and ends up having her eyes and mouth transposed.

5. Puff Daddy (featuring The Notorious B.I.G. and Busta Rhymes) – “Victory”$2.7 million
Taking place in the year 3002 CE, this video features Puff Daddy as Contestant #5. Dennis Hopper and Danny DeVito both make cameos—as a dictatorial president and a live action reporter, respectively—as Contestant #5 is chased through dark streets and rooftops by the armed forces of Chase TV.
